Building Civil Society Capacity to Mitigate and Counter Disinformation

Suara Masyarakat

The implementation period for Suara Masyarakat (SM) or ‘Community Voices’ in Bahasa Malaysia, officially began in January 2020. SM is a three-year project funded by the EU and implemented by Internews in Malaysia together with local partners to build the capacity of Malaysian journalists to deliver high quality investigative and data journalism on the reform processes in the country. Moreover, SM aims to develop community information media and networks to improve governance by providing two-way communication between citizens and local authorities mainly through ‘MOJO Kita!

Media Program in Ukraine

The USAID-funded Media Program in Ukraine will empower local media to expand Ukrainian citizens’ access to high-quality news and information. This project, implemented by Internews from 2018-2023, is the largest media development activity in Ukraine’s history, and represents a significant US $35m investment in Ukraine’s independent media sector. The last four years have seen a raft of important media reforms in the realms of access to information, transparency of media ownership and public service broadcasting.

Assessment of Online Risks for the 2021 German Federal Elections

A report analyzing the online environment and potential risks for the 2021 German Federal Elections. It studies topics ranging from online advertising, hate speech, disinformation and foreign interference. The end of the report provides recommendations for improvements and regulations in each category. 

Rooted in Trust

Rooted in Trust is a pandemic information response plan countering the unprecedented scale and speed of the spread of rumors and misinformation about COVID-19. The plan is global in reach and grounded in hyper-local information ecosystems in the Philippines, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Mali, Sudan, the Central African Republic and Colombia to ensure impact on the global level and on the local level directly in vulnerable communities affected by humanitarian crises.

Credible Information for Democratic Governance

Domestic and foreign disinformation narratives are deepening public disillusion over Serbia’s complex democratic transition process and its prospects for European integration. In this vein, the National Democratic Institute’s (NDI) public opinion research in Serbia in 2018 highlighted the importance of “microenvironments”—local communities—as consequential to how citizens process information on public affairs, including disinformation narratives, which are primarily received through mainstream broadcast media.

Ethiopia Check

Ethiopia Check debunks claims and exposes fake news using its platforms on Facebook (52,000 followers), Twitter (7,000 followers) and Telegram (34,000 followers). Ethiopia Check also provides online tools for the public to check the authenticity of images circulating on social media and distributes an email newsletter to newsrooms across the country.

263Chat was launched on September 29 2012 as a way of encouraging and participating in progressive and national dialogue in Zimbabwe. The use of the internet and the numerous social media tools available play an integral role in this entire process. 

Zimbabweans are already engaged in numerous conversations about their daily lives in Zimbabwe and beyond. 263Chat aims, in part, to amplify their voices. 

263Chat is an award winning media organisation, having won the Telkom-Highway Africa New Media Awards 2013 Innovative Use of Technology for Community Engagement. 

InformNapalm

InformNapalm is a volunteer initiative emerged as a response to the Russian aggression in Ukraine in March 2014.

It was started by journalist Roman Burko (Ukraine) and military expert Irakli Komaxidze (Georgia).

Now it unites the efforts of more than 30 volunteers from over 10 countries.
Our investigations are available for our readers in more than 20 languages.

Liga Contra el Silencio

We define ourselves as an alliance that involves the media, a central newsroom and a network of freelance collaborators . We come together to investigate and disseminate journalistic stories on which a silence imposed by all kinds of censors weighs or that occur in places in Colombia where there are not enough media. We produce two types of publications: reports and interviews. Both are always disseminated on our portal and in the twenty allied media at their discretion.
