Tactical Tech’s Gendersec Training Curricula on “Hacking Hate Speech”

A training workshop curriculum on how to set up an online support network, create textual and visual counterspeech content, and deploy a counterspeech campaign. The “Hacking Hate Speech” session focuses on countering online hate speech, including learning how to conduct simple threat modelling, identify attackers, and develop strategies to mitigate hate speech.  

PEN America’s “Online Harassment Field Manual"

A training guide for journalists and writers on how to respond to online harassment and abuse, including building a community of supporters and developing counterspeech messages. The manual was written with and for the group disproportionately impacted by online abuses including writers, journalists, artists, and activists who identify as women, BIPOC, and/or LGBTQIA+. It provides guidance for individuals being targeted, witnesses or allies, and employers supporting staff experiencing online harassment. 

HeartMob

HeartMob is a community dedicated to helping those experiencing online harassment. This platform is an at-the-ready network of supporters available to respond to users’ reports of online harassment and provide positive support messages.  Additionally, the HeartMob community assists members with reporting comments or profiles on social media platforms and maintains documentation for potential legal action.

TrollBusters

TrollBusters is an at-the-ready network of supporters to respond to women journalists’ reports of online harassment by providing positive counterspeech. Their services include monitoring the targets’ social media accounts for continued attacks, sending continued counter-messaging, and conducting training on digital security and response measures. 

Liga Contra el Silencio

We define ourselves as an alliance that involves the media, a central newsroom and a network of freelance collaborators . We come together to investigate and disseminate journalistic stories on which a silence imposed by all kinds of censors weighs or that occur in places in Colombia where there are not enough media. We produce two types of publications: reports and interviews. Both are always disseminated on our portal and in the twenty allied media at their discretion.

MOE Election Observation

The Election Observation Mission (La Misión de Observación Electoral, MOE) is an election observer group based in Colombia. In the 2019 Colombia elections and in others, including the 2016 peace referendum, they have formed partnerships with Facebook and Twitter both for creating awareness of voting processes and other democratic issues throughout hashtags and online campaigns, and also set up systems for reporting harmful content on those platforms. MOE also worked with a network of universities for online and media monitoring of content during the 2019 elections cycle.

The Dangerous Speech Project

The Dangerous Speech Project was founded in 2010 to study speech (any form of human expression) that inspires violence between groups of people – and to find ways to mitigate this while protecting freedom of expression. We work primarily in four areas:

TrolleyBust

TrolleyBust is a service for tracking and blocking Internet trolls and other sources of anti-Ukrainian propaganda.

The goal is to open access to tools and unite the efforts of volunteers to clean up propaganda directed against Ukraine and Ukrainians.

They operate in several areas:
- Blocking propagandists and "experts"
- Bots, fake accounts
- Other users questioning the territorial integrity of Ukraine
